Piper Lawson, why do you do this to me????

I know, I know. I came into this book with a full awareness that it was a trilogy, and I had every intention to keep that nugget in mind when I started this read. Yet, somehow Piper Lawson pulled me into this book world, had me fully invested in Clay and Nova, and had the rug pulled from under me...again. Yet, somehow -- after all the screaming and fist shaking -- I am more than ready for the third book.

The second installment of the King of the Court trilogy opens with Nova being back in Denver. The team owner has hired her to paint a mural at the stadium to showcase the team's milestone anniversary. Despite knowing that she will eventually cross paths with Clay, this project was a huge stepping stone for her career. Determined to not let her past with Clayton Wade get in the way of her ambitions, she builds a wall around her heart and starts painting.

It isn't too long before the veteran basketball star comes back into her life. A few close encounters spark the dormant flame between them. (NOTE: This is the part where the wall I built around myself to remember this is a three-parter also fell apart.) The more they interact, the more they each realize what had driven them apart before was inconsequential compared to their hopeful future together.

Then Piper Lawson drops a killer cliffhanger.

Did I mention that I really, really, really tried to keep my emotions at arm's length from Clay and Nova's love story? Yeah, that was demolished with Lawson's slow build-up to their reconciliation. The hesitant friendship slowly blooms into a deep emotional connection. The moment they both realized this was their fate? It was the moment we wanted for them so much, too.

I fell in love with their friends as well, and wish them the best as they each figure out their own paths. I wish there was more spice in this read (because I am greedy like that), but I recognize that this was a time to develop that deeper connection between our two main characters. 

Trying to read this as a standalone could work, but you would be doing yourself a disservice by not getting to know the history and build-up to Clayton and Nova's story. There is a reason that despite the emotional trauma from all of these cliffies, we come running back for more.
