I love a possessive, growly man who is so extra, and Callum McCord nails that role perfectly.
Emery Eastwood's bookstore is more than just a small business. It is her late father's legacy, and now it is in danger when a corporate competitor moves in across the street. Emery and her quirky group of employees/friends are now on the verge of unemployment until Callum enters the picture.
Callum is looking for a wife. No, no, he is not looking for commitment or happily ever after. Just a wife in order to collect his inheritance, and having overheard Emery's situation, he thinks she is the perfect match to be his fake spouse. Despite her resistance to the proposal, failing her friends and her late father was worse in her book than being tied to the frustrating man who holds the key to her financial security.
I am not going to take it personally, but I think J.T. Geissinger is determined to ruin me with her books. I have come to discover that picking one of her releases comes with the warning of "expect the unexpected" and this series seems to be on par with that.
Y'all - I did not expect that twist. (No spoilers so that is all I am going to say.)
That said, the chemistry between Callum and Emery was FIRE. Even when Emery was antagonizing Callum for her own entertainment, Geissinger drops small hints that Emery is not completely averse to the handsome billionaire. She lets the tension brew as we move through the story, and when we finally get to the spicy scenes? Perfection.
This was a great kick-off to a promising series, and if this is supposed to set the tone for the subsequent books? Sign me up!
