BOOKWORM REVIEW: The One Who Loves You by Pippa Grant

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5

Just like for Phoebe Lightly, falling in love with Tickled Pink, Wisconsin had a slow start for me, but once it got going, I did not realize I was so far gone until it was over.

Phoebe is not loving life right now. Her grandmother has dragged her and the rest of her city-slicker family to this quirky small town with hopes to redeem herself and her family from a fiery afterlife. Unfortunately, Grandma Gigi thinks throwing money at the locals while following a B-list movie about an older lady looking to find redemption in -- you guessed it -- Tickled Pink will pave her way to heaven. Now Phoebe and her relatives must deal with the wrath of the locals, including a grumpy lumberjack who cannot seem to get out of Phoebe's head.

Teague Miller was hoping to distance himself from the Lightly Family, but he too cannot seem to shake this attraction to the clueless but endearing Phoebe.

So this story has a slow start. We're talking lots of narratives. and Pippa Grant really drives home the point that the Lightly Family are self-centered fishes out of water in Tickled Pink. On the flip side, she also gets into detail about the town and its own set of quirks. Once you get through that overwhelming amount of information, however, you start to see the charms of the main characters and even some of the ensemble cast themselves.

The main theme of the book is finding out who you really are and what place you would like in life. Pippa Grant cheekily gives us plenty of examples while highlighting that the less important things, like age and wealth, do not matter in self-discovery.

I love that in the midst of that, Teague and Phoebe find emotional connection and peace with each other. They have this immediate connection that they try to fight. However, because the tension is just so overwhelming and delicious, they eventually surrender to it, giving us some incredibly spicy moments.

This is the first of the series, and it looks like we're getting Tavi and Dylan's story next. That is going to be a fun one, and I cannot wait.

ABOUT THE BOOK

From USA Today bestselling author Pippa Grant comes a fabulously sharp-witted romantic comedy about a socialite’s fall from elitist grace to backcountry purgatory—and her accidental tumble into love.

If the Upper East Side had an evil twin, it would be Tickled Pink, Wisconsin. This run-down, backwoods town isn’t worthy of the footprint of my Louboutins, never mind all of me.

But when my grandmother has a near-death experience and realizes we Lightlys can’t buy our way into heaven, she relocates the family to Tickled Pink to work on improving our souls. And that’s how I trade my heiress existence for gigantic bugs, dishwater coffee, and a cranky single dad named Teague Miller.

Teague spends his days fishing, raising his spunky teenager, and after an unfortunate incident involving cheese curds, living rent-free in my head. The one thing he and I can agree on is that I don’t belong here. He’s willing to help me escape—until the unexpected happens.

I kind of like him. I might even more than like him.

But am I ready to give up the life I adored for a man I love to hate?
