BOOKWORM REVIEW: Shopping for a Highlander by Julia Kent

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
STEAM: πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

I am really not sure what to say about this book. Julia Kent takes you on a roller coaster of emotions. From laughing too hard to being annoyed to falling in love - it has been one crazy ride.

This book picks up a couple of months after Shopping for a Turkey. Amy Jacoby has graduated with her MBA and looking for a job. After a series of events, she is not quite sure how she ended up being Hamish McCormick's handler, but yet here she is.

They had a falling out after news broke that he slept with his coach's daughter and there was a video. His agent and a company hoping to invest in Hamish have hired Amy to make sure he behaves. Neither one of them are happy about the arrangement, and while traveling to L.A. for a photoshoot, Hamish does whatever he can to antagonize poor Amy.

Hamish is not just the cocky playboy that he seems. While we saw glimpses of the real Hamish in the first book, we see more of that in this one. Yes, he is good-looking, stacked, and charming, but he is also protective, gentle, and kind. The book gives us more insight into his Scotland family dynamic and how he works with his teammates. Just like Amy, we are blindsided by this guy who really got on our nerves but yet somehow snuck into our hearts.

Amy's journey in this book is the opposite of Hamish's. We got more of the family dynamic from hers in Book One, and in this one, she has to fly solo most of the time. We still get small snippets of her adorable family, but for the most part, we get to understand why Amy is so neurotic and guarded.

If you're looking for a spicy read, this is not quite the book to pick up. Where this book shines is the comedic interactions between Hamish and Amy and between them and their family/friends/colleagues and the development arc of their relationship. We do get a couple of scenes, and I think this book would definitely qualify as a slow burn, but you would miss the point of the read if you want to focus on the physical aspect of their relationship.

I guess this book can work as a standalone, but you would miss the whole picture if you did not read Shopping for a Turkey at least. Julia Kent does a great job of integrating characters from previous series without overexplaining, but you get more depth into Hamish and Amy if you read Book One of this series.

** I am voluntarily reviewing an advance copy of this book. **

ABOUT THE BOOK

I’m a professional chickenblocker.

Except “chicken” is a euphemism.

I get paid to follow a womanizing troglodyte who thinks rules are for other people and that my pants are the next pair he’s getting into.

Dream on.

Bet your first professional job didn’t involve babysitting an extremely hot, muscle-bound Scottish Highlander with an ego the size of a kilt and a libido bigger than his…well…

Chicken.

Keeping Scottish football (that’s ‘soccer” to us Americans) player Hamish McCormick away from inappropriate scandals while he does product endorsement campaigns is my mission.

No problem.

Until Hamish decides I’m his next scandal.

And maybe more….

Shopping for a Highlander is an enemies-to-lovers, slow burn romance that opens with a surprise kiss and ends with a happily ever after. This sports comedy in the New York Times bestselling Shopping for a Billionaire world contains no actual chickens, but it has plenty of locker room scenes, a fake relationship, very real banter, and more. You do not have to have read the previous books in this world, though after you read about Amy and Hamish, you’ll want to.

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Julia Kent writes romantic comedy with an edge. Since 2013, she has sold more than 1.5 million books, with 4 New York Times bestsellers and more than 16 appearances on the USA Today bestseller list. Her books have been translated into French and German, with more titles releasing soon. From billionaires to BBWs to new adult rock stars, Julia finds a sensual, goofy joy in every contemporary romance she writes. Unlike Shannon from Shopping for a Billionaire, she did not meet her husband after dropping her phone in a men's room toilet (and he isn't a billionaire). She lives in New England with her husband and three children in a household where the toilet seat is never, ever, down.
