Hooked is a very appropriate name for this book, because that is how you will feeling the second you start reading it. It is not a Peter Pan retelling. It takes the fairy tale and deconstructs it, centering on Hook as the main character.

James Barrie is the second to the most powerful man in the city. He is also plotting revenge on the people responsible for his father's death with Peter Michaels on the top of that kill list.

Wendy is Peter's daughter, neglected and left to raise her younger brother Jon. New to the city, she is peer-pressured by friends to go to Jolly Rogers, a local nightclub run by James.

Their paths colliding sets up a chain of events that catalyzes James' revenge plan.

So..if you've been following me long enough, you know that I love villains and morally grey characters. However, I was never a Captain Hook fan because every time I think of him, I always see the Disney version, not the OUAT version (IYKYK). Emily McIntire has COMPLETELY changed my mind with this book.

James is aggressively hot, cunning, and charming. He is dangerous to his enemies and to women's underwear, because he seems to be responsible for making both disappear. While he could easily dominate the pages, Wendy holds her own. She is kind but sassy, and she keeps our anti-hero on his toes. When these two get together, their chemistry sets the pages on fire.

This has been one of my favorite reads in 2021, and I recommend this book wholeheartedly and cannot wait for book 2. Please do heed the trigger warnings at the start of the book.

** I received an ARC of this book and am posting an honest review voluntarily. **
