BOOKWORM REVIEW: Dirty Little Secret by LK Farlow

Dirty Little Secret starts with Stella falling in love with Samson when she was 10 years old. He came to her aid when she fell from a tree, and since then, she's had heart-eyes for him and vows to be his forever.
Samson thinks she's adorable, but his feelings morph from amusement to attraction as they get older. He is very aware of their slight (about 4-5 years) age gap and is respectful of her parents' rules and of his friendship with her older brother, so he maintains a physical and emotional distance from Stella.
I like Samson. You can see his struggle between setting good, solid boundaries with Stella and fighting his feelings for her. He is nice and supportive, and you definitely get that he will do anything for her. LK Farlow does a fantastic job in creating a hero who is relatable; I can see why Stella would be attracted to him.
I struggled the most with liking Stella. You can clearly feel her age and immaturity through her actions. I adore that she knows what she wants when it comes to love, but she has difficulty in asserting them while respecting herself and other people's boundaries. She instigates and perpetuates the emotional tug-of-war between herself and Samson, and while I get that this was the point of the book's premise, I thought that there was little progression in this back-and-forth.
I really wanted to like this book. May-December romance is one of my favorite tropes because it speaks to love being rooted in the emotional and psychological. While Samson meets that expectation, Stella just made it hard to reconcile their age difference. It took supporting characters like Martha and even Orion (Stella's brother) to bridge that gap.
