BOOKWORM REVIEW: Under Pressure by Bella Matthews

This book solidified Bella Matthews as a must-read for me. I am fighting off the strongest urge to ignore my scheduled TBR, pick up Book 1 of the Kings of Kroydon Hills, and binge-read all of them.

This book is THAT GOOD.

This is my introduction to the Kroydon Hills world, and I am enamored by all of them. Even though I feel like a latecomer to an already established network, I did not feel lost at all because Bella Matthews does a phenomenal job in re-introducing the characters and their context without feeling forced.

Under Pressure is the fourth book in the Kings of Kroydon Hills series. It focuses on Sebastian Benaventi and Eleanor Kingston.

Sebastian, or Bash, is a formidable defensive linesman for Kroydon and is considering a professional football career. He also maintains his distance from his mafia family, which is hard, considering Pops is the Don of Philadelphia and brother Sam is the heir apparent.

Eleanor is also Philadelphia Royalty. Her family owns the Kings, the local NFL franchise, and Lenny is to take her place as the head of the analytics department (girl after my own heart) after playing the prodigal daughter in London for a few years.

Bash and Lenny meet and hook up at the very beginning. Lenny, however, does not disclose her connection to the Kings, even Bash finds out later. Bash also has secrets of his own that ties back to the family he keeps at arm’s length.

As I have said, this book is brilliant. The pacing is great; I don’t think there was a moment where I was not engaged in the story. Matthews’ writing pulls you in and draws empathy for all her main characters. I wanted to know their stories, including the ones that don’t have a book (yet). Even if you are not a sports or mafia romance, I would still recommend this book. You would definitely enjoy the story and maybe fall in love with the characters as much as I did.
