In moments of adversity, sometimes we need someone to tell us that. And sometimes we just need them to hold us.
I love that we get that dichotomy in Gina Azzi's sixth installment of the Boston Hawks series.
The Heart Chaser kicks off with Hawks goalie Luca ghosting Abbi after a fling. She is now back in Boston to work for the Hawks, leaving behind an embarrassing secret in NJ and resolving to never mix business with pleasure.
This book takes a fantastic look at real instalove. Not the kind that many dirty novellas have (though I do LOVE those), but the kind of immediate emotional connection between two people. As someone who has been there, I love how realistic Gina set it up. The thrill and trepidation of the first "I love you," the uncertainty around going too fast, the fear of what people -- especially family and friends -- would think.
My other favorite part is that it really centers around Abbi's journey to overcome her adversities. The dichotomy I mentioned before are between the different advice by the two important people in Abbi's life. Her grandmother tells her to toughen up, and Abbi has been following that as a Golden Rule. As a result, she becomes fiercely independent and very wary of letting people in.
On the other hand, Luca helps her understand that you can't do it all by yourself. Coming from a big loving family, Luca knows what it means to be there for someone you love and to have them return that support. I truly enjoyed reading about how Abbi navigates between these two.
I only wished her creepy ex should have faced harsher consequences for what he did to Abbi.
