BOOKWORM REVIEW: The Summer I Saved You by Elizabeth O'Roark

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐
SPICE: πŸ”₯πŸ”₯.5

Unfortunately, this did not live up to the first book in the series.

Caleb and Lucie knew in their hearts that they were meant to be, but life took them through different and trying paths only to bring them together again. Now Lucie is juggling her son with the trials of controlling ex-husband, and Caleb is a grumpy CEO and Lucie's boss.

Poor Lucie. She and her kid are the reason this gets a three-star for me. While I am usually more forgiving when it comes to grumpy bosses, I felt like there was not much to redeem him in this read. Lucie's strength and resilience were quite inspiring, however, and that was enough to get me through this read.

I do need to remind myself that the first book in the series has set the bar quite high for the rest of its successors, but this one -- which can be read as a standalone -- did not even come close. I am skeptical about who is next in the series, but Elizabeth O'Roark has certainly pleasantly surprised me before.

** I am voluntarily reviewing an advance copy of this book. Thank you to Elizabeth O'Roark and Valentine PR and Literary Management for providing an ARC. **

ABOUT THE BOOK

CALEB
I came to the lake to be left alone, to lick my wounds. I wasn't counting on neighbors and I especially wasn't counting on her.

Lucie was a little kid the last time I was here. Now she's grown—and God, did she ever grow up—with two young kids of her own.

She's everywhere I look, no matter how hard I try to avoid her. I'd forgotten all the things I used to want, used to dream about. She's reminding me...and making me want every last one of them again.

LUCIE
From the moment I first saw Caleb when I was six, I knew he belonged to me. And I knew I'd have to save him—because how else does the girl nobody wants win over the boy beloved by all?

Nothing about his life or mine has gone to plan. He's isolated and miserable. I've got a vindictive ex and more problems than I can count.

But what hasn't changed is this: it still feels like he's mine.

And I still think I may need to save him.
