Dear Derek,

I need you to get your stuff together. You just can't come barging in like the Kool-Aid man with little care for how far Allegra has come in recovering from her heartache. The one and the same heartache we can attribute to your callous decisions from the previous book. 

I really like you, even though right now Allegra's friend Ethan might be a better option. If she were my friend or family, I certainly would steer her that way, but this is romancelandia. We like to give broken, red-flag-laden guys like you a second (or third or fourth) chance at getting this right.

This second installment in the Burnt Clovers Trilogy opens with the aftermath of Derek's decision from the first book. He and the band have left for Europe, leaving Allegra to pick up the pieces of her broken heart and her brother to go to rehab. 

Gina Azzi really immerses us in Allegra's pain and resentment. We sit in for a hot minute, fully convinced that Derek has an ice's chance in the fiery pits to get back in Allegra's good graces. When he comes back for a promo stop, he gets a wake-up call upon seeing Allegra and wants to get together with her. I am so glad she does not make it easy. 

I am always skeptical when authors split books into duets or trilogy, but Azzi made her case in this installment. While the first book centered around connection, this book really dove deep into growth. Growth for each of our main characters and for their relationship. Allegra needed to find her independence and her spine, and the arc where she finds both is so angsty but beautiful. Derek needed to find clarity and to appreciate Allegra more and better. Azzi served us with a delicious helping of groveling and emotional prostration from Derek to Allegra that had me sold.

Of course, this is only the middle story of a trilogy, so we get another cliffie. And it looks like Gina promises another wild, emotional roller coaster ride ahead.
