BOOKWORM REVIEW: Longtime Crush by Carrie Ann Ryan

THE. ANGST.

You better be prepared when you read this book. I say that because it will bring the heartache and drama, and I mean that in the best way possible.

Raven has had a crush on Sebastian since they were kids, but Sebastian being her best friend Marley's boyfriend and eventually husband was off-limits. There were no hard feelings, of course, and she kept her crush to herself even as she packed her stuff up and moved away, hoping that absence would make her crush go weaker.

When Marley passes away while giving birth to their daughter Nora, Raven is compelled to come back for the funeral and eventually decides to stay indefinitely. She did not expect for Sebastian to be living next door, however.

Time passes, and while Sebastian navigates through his grief, he and Raven find themselves bonding over what was and what currently is.

This was slow-burn perfection. Carrie Ann Ryan did a phenomenal job of not rushing a second-chance love between a widower and a mutual friend. Yeah, it has a lot going on, but I am glad she took the time for Sebastian to really process his loss and build this deep connection with Raven over their love for Marley.

The pacing was on-brand with the angsty, slow-sizzle story. I felt pulled out of it, however, when the subplot involving Marley's parents came on. Even with that, this was still a really good read.

It can be read as a standalone, even though there are a lot of characters from previous books and series. It also has elements that segue nicely into Greer. Noah, and Ford's story, which is THE book I have been waiting for in this series.

ABOUT THE BOOK

When my best friend and I fell for the same guy in middle school, I stepped back.
I'd always expected to dance at their wedding.
Not sit in the back pew of her funeral.
I left town for my own reasons, but now that I'm back, it’s clear Sebastian Montgomery isn't the same man I left.
He's hard. Broken.
And a single father to an adorable little girl.
When it turns out he’s my new neighbor, I can’t stay away.
But I know I’m playing with fire and the heat between us burns enough to scorch.
I thought I was over my crush.
But now it might crush me.
