BOOKWORM REVIEW: The Bite by Z.W. Taylor

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
SPICE: πŸ”₯

I did not realize that this was a trilogy as I was reading it. That actually alleviated my annoyance about the lack of physical connection between the two main characters, especially when their chemistry is off the chain.

Charlotte is on the run from her abusive husband. She has ditched any remnants of her past life -- including her image -- and is driving to a safe haven in Alaska. A wrong turn leads her to a dangerous path that involves a run-in with rogue wolves. A bite from one changes the course of her life forever.

The book is captivating from the get-go. I held my breath as Charlotte navigates through her escape, and the suspense transitions nicely into mystery around the aftermath of the bite. There are points in the story where the explanation of Charlotte's condition becomes too much, but the charisma of the characters keeps drawing you in.

As I mentioned, I love the connection between Charlotte and her potential love interest. Every exchange just leaves us wanting more. We don't get that in this read, so I am hoping that Z.W. Taylor is reserving that for Books 2 and 3.

I also love the supporting cast. Derek, Elliott, and even the elusive Lander will charm readers to want to know more about their own stories.

Folks looking for romance may be disappointed, but this book may be laying the groundwork for an amazing love story. I will certainly be reading Books 2 and 3 to see this series through.

** I am voluntarily reviewing an advance copy of this book. Thank you to Z.W. Taylor, Wattpad, and NetGalley for providing an ARC. **

ABOUT THE BOOK

When Charlotte escapes her abusive relationship, she flees in the middle of the night with nothing but the cash in her pocket, and the paper map leading her north to Alaska. She sheds her old self along the way—dying her hair, scrubbing off her fake California tan, pawning all the jewelry her ex, Nate, bought her over the years. None of it was worth anything if she couldn’t stay alive.

Alone in the Alaskan forest, Charlotte feels safe at last. Even if she’s lost. Even if she’s only got a burner phone that lost its last bar miles ago, and even if she missed her turn and can’t find the cabin she was promised by a friend. Tucked into a sleeping bag in the backseat of “Ted”—her ancient 4-Runner—she’s finally living life on her own terms.

But that feeling is short-lived. In the middle of the woods, Charlotte’s attacked, brutally, and unforgivingly—and a lone wolf bites her leg. And it’s a bite that will change her life forever.
