BOOKWORM REVIEW: How to Lose at Love by Sara Ney

Ryann Winters had zero clue what was coming to her. She knew that Diego, the football player she has been seeing, has been sending mixed signals, but what she did not expect was for his teammate, the good-looking but somewhat flighty Dallas Colter, to do the hard work of breaking up with her. Let's just say she didn't take the news well.
So it is a surprise when Dallas comes popping back into her life once more, asking if she would become his fake girlfriend. He's got to be kidding, right? As with any well-written fake dating trope, these two come to realize that as they spend more time together, they have more common ground than they thought.
Dallas and Ryann's arc from incredulity to hate to friendship to love was really well-paced. Sara Ney always nails the perfect spot for witty and flirty banter, and the main characters' relationship development was nicely filled with that. Peppered with a spicy enemies-to-lovers chemistry and sizzling moments, we got ourselves a very nice kick-off to a promising series.
Oh, Dallas Colter. You have trouble written all over you. Ryann held her own in this story, but the charming -- sometimes clueless -- Dallas always seems to steal the show for me. I mean, you're an up-and-coming NFL stud, and you take $50 from your teammate to break up with someone? While IRL it is a major red flag, Ney *always* *somehow* creates magic by making us like these shady AF characters. π She makes them so relatable and charismatic that we end up cheering for them.
This series starter can be read as a standalone, but it does have character connections to previous and future Sara Ney releases. Don't fret -- you do get a lot of context of who's who so you won't get lost in this universe.

ABOUT THE BOOK
I, Dallas Colter, need a good girl to save my bad reputation.
With too much on my plate, the very last thing on my mind was a relationship—the football draft was looming and dating got in the way. I never understood why my teammates bothered with girlfriends. None of us had the time.
When my sports agent suggested that being seen in public with a respectable girl would be good for my bad reputation, I couldn’t think of a single person to help me out. The only girls I knew weren’t wifey material, and the ones who were? Might catch feelings.
Except Ryann Winters.
Responsible. Sarcastic. Smart. Ryann is perfect but there was one clincher: she was my teammates ex-girlfriend and I had recently been paid by him to dump her.
Not the best start to a fake relationship…
