BOOKWORM REVIEW: The Devil Gets His Due by Elizabeth O'Roark

Keeley has always been the fun one in every friend group she has. They can rely on the up-and-coming plastic surgeon to party hard and live life to the fullest. The only damper on Keeley's loud extroverted parade of life is practical and broody Graham Tate, and unfortunately, she has to work with him in planning her best friend's wedding festivities before said bestie marries Graham's brother.

When the two get super-drunk at one of the parties, they wake up the following morning in bed together..and married. Did I mention that Keeley later finds out that she's pregnant with Graham's baby?

I am going to admit it: Keeley was insufferable at the beginning. Her whimsical, party-hard approach to life comes off as immature and vapid. I was horrified when I got to the part where she discovers she is pregnant and laments the loss of being able to go to Coachella. But then Elizabeth O'Roark takes us on a wonderful character development journey where Keeley does some soul-searching on what she wants out of life without having to cater to other people's perception of her and where we -- along with Graham -- uncover that there is more to Keeley: why she tries to embrace a whimsical lifestyle and gives everyone the impression that she is unreliable and flighty.

I love their chemistry. The snark, the spicy moments, the longing. All of that just pulls you into Team Keeham (or is it Graley). Their enemies-to-lovers banter is on point and ties in nicely with the progression of their relationship.

This is the fourth book of O'Roark's Devil series, but it can be read as a standalone. Characters from other books do make an appearance in this read, but we get enough context to decipher who's who in this book universe.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Keeley: Last January, I drunk-married my nemesis—hot, oversized geek Graham Tate. With no memory of how it came about, there was only one solution: run off before he woke up and pretend it didn’t happen. It would have worked perfectly if I hadn’t wound up pregnant.

Graham is the opposite of everything I want in a man—practical, disciplined, frugal—but living with him until the baby arrives has me wondering if, perhaps, I’ve been wanting the wrong things all along. And if that drunk version of me last January might have been onto something.

Graham: I never planned to have kids, and I certainly wouldn’t have planned on one with Keeley Connolly—a woman who does not believe in savings accounts or personal safety and thinks Lucky Charms is a health food because of the non-marshmallow bits.

A woman who also didn’t think twice about marrying me in Vegas and ditching me hours later.

I can’t wait to put this behind me and return to my careful, chaos-free life in New York. But the more time I spend with Keeley, the more I’m remembering the things that led me to marry her in the first place…and wondering if I can live without them when this ends.
