BOOKWORM REVIEW: A Thousand Heartbeats by Kiera Cass

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
SPICE: πŸ”₯.5

A princess stuck in a golden cage, dreading the day she is married away for politics.

A fierce warrior forced to serve a cruel stepfather.

Two people on opposite sides of a growing war, they were born to be enemies, but when circumstances force them to cross paths, they cannot seem to muster the animosity required of them. The more they get to know each other, the more rage and hatred start to make way for admiration..and maybe something more.

This read had a slow start as we get the lay of the land. It does start to gain momentum about a quarter in. The pacing after improves, giving us a balance of action, suspense, and romance.

The chemistry between Annika and Lennox is great. Even when they were ready to end each other, small details build their connection organically. The development of their enemies-to-lovers story felt natural, even inevitable. This is not a spicy read at all, but the arc of them coming together to fight everyone else who has done them wrong was equally as satisfying.

This standalone read was fun and engaging. I love how detailed and sometimes opulent this book universe is, and while Maxon and America remain as my favorite Kiera Cass couple, Annika and Lennox are not too far off.

** I am voluntarily reviewing an advance copy of this book. Thank you to Kiera Cass, HarperTeen, and NetGalley for providing an ARC. **

ABOUT THE BOOK

#1 New York Times bestselling author of The Selection series Kiera Cass is back with her most epic novel yet—a sweeping enemies-to-lovers standalone romance.

“Love has a sound. It sounds like a thousand heartbeats happening at the same time.”

Princess Annika has lived a life of comfort—but no amount of luxuries can change the fact that her life isn’t her own to control. The king, once her loving father, has gone cold, and Annika will soon be forced into a loveless marriage for political gain.

Miles away, small comforts are few and far between for Lennox. He has devoted his life to the Dahrainian army, hoping to one day help them reclaim the throne that was stolen from them. For Lennox, the idea of love is merely a distraction—nothing will stand in the way of fighting for his people.

But when love, against all odds, finds them both, they are bound by its call. They can’t possibly be together—but the irresistible thrum of a thousand heartbeats won’t let them stay apart.

Kiera Cass brings her signature sparkling romance to this beautiful story of star-crossed lovers and long-held secrets.
