BOOKWORM REVIEW: Resisting the Grump by Ashley Munoz

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5

This was a somewhat angsty read that will have you believing in fate and destiny.

Raelyn Jackson has avoided coming home to Mount Macon for four years. Yes, she misses her parents, her best friend, and the quiet peace her small town offered, but a heartbreaking incident during her last year in high school had Rae packing her bags for college and never looking back.

Never is not apparently forever as Rae finds her breaking point with city living and returns home. The shame of failing to thrive in the city is nowhere near the shame of keeping a secret involving Davis, the town shut-in and her childhood crush.

What she has not realized is that Davis is far more embedded in her life than she thought, and evading him is out of the question. She also did not expect the look of longing reflected back from his face whenever he glances her way.

I related so hard to Rae in this read. From the awkward teen just trying to get her crush's attention to the grown albeit still awkward woman who cringes at those memories, Ashley Munoz did a remarkable job in making her so relatable. Her arc from surviving as a heartbroken teen to finally being the object of Davis' affection is every woman's fantasy, though my childhood crush turned out to be a jerk so I'll gladly stick to Davis.

And the spice was an unexpected surprise that kept on coming..I mean giving. Davis, you dirty talker! I absolutely loved how he took control in these moments yet had the gentlest care for Rae's well-being.

This is the first of The Mount Macon series, and we already have a great preview for the next story. I absolutely love an enemies-to-lovers where one provokes the other to madness, and I am so there for Nora and Colton's story.

** I am voluntarily reviewing an advance copy of this book. Thank you to Ashley Munoz and Social Butterfly PR for providing an ARC. **

ABOUT THE BOOK

Stalking the town recluse wasn’t exactly wise.

Davis was five years older than me…antisocial and temperamental. And there was the little fact that he didn’t know I existed.

Still, I gave him my heart, and he crushed it.

So I picked up the pieces and ran away to New York City. I had a plan that kept my heart intact for four years.

But one phone call changed everything.

Returning home meant facing the past…and the man who ruined me.

I had hoped that the mountain had swallowed him whole. Alas, as I set out to help my parents, I discover he’s not only alive and well, but that they apparently love the jerk.

He has no idea that we have a past, which is both a relief and salt in the wound.

I promise myself I’ll ignore how his eyes linger on me, or the way his touch feels like a live wire, and I’ll remember that once upon a time he broke me and for that I refuse to fall for him again.

But I can’t control that he seems to be falling for me this time.
