BOOKWORM REVIEW: Of Truths and Bonds by Zavi James

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I think Zavi James has broken me..at least for a while after reading this book.

If you have not read Of Gods and Monsters and love books about gods and love, I highly suggest starting with that and jumping right in with this read.

The second book in the Elysian Gods series picks up after the events of the first book. Without spoiling too much of the first, Quentin and Grayson have been separated by the other gods after finding out a key secret about Quen. Now they must figure out a plan to find their way back to each other and keep themselves safe.

But the politics of the Gods are far more complex and dangerous than that of mortals. And Zavi James captivates our attention from the first page all the way to "The End" with mystery, magic, and romance. The chemistry that had us falling in love with Quen and Gray still holds strong in the second book. I enjoy their banter most especially.

There is a lot going on in this book, but James does a great job of not overwhelming readers by having enough details to keep things moving. I always felt like I was sucked into the book for ages after reading each book in this series, but I enjoy every minute of it. You get invested in the characters, especially Quentin and Grayson, and you go through their every emotion. Even the godly antagonists convey some humane characteristics that make you understand what drives them.

This is not the end of their story, so you will get a whooper of a cliffhanger. I may or may not have screamed like a banshee before starting the countdown to the next book.

ABOUT THE BOOK

“You’re a scientist, Quentin. One microlitre. One milligram. One decimal point. The smallest fraction can change the course of your work and endanger lives, no?”

Grayson thought he could break his host – the non-believer with an iron will – until he discovered they were soulbound. By saving her life, he’s hung a death sentence over her head. All the careful plans he laid out must be pushed aside in order to convince the council that her existence is valuable. But the God of Chaos isn’t known for his congeniality.

Quentin never trusted the Gods, and they have proven her right. Half of them lied to her about what she truly was, and the other half want her dead because of it. Time is running out before the council reconvene, and she has a lot to learn. For once, the books won’t help her, and she must rely on the Gods more than ever.

As Quentin learns to control her powers and accept her heritage, a series of truths come to light and leave her questioning everyone around her. Elysian politics is far more complicated than she imagined, and she’s landed in the centre of it. There are no safe bets in the heavens. Everyone looks out for themselves.

The Gods aren’t what they seem, but they know how to put on a show. Can you survive?
