BOOKWORM REVIEW: Queen of Hearts by Alta Hensley

The struggle with trilogy reads is that readers often wonder if the story could have been told in fewer books. That was the main theme for me in the second installment of Alta Hensley's Wonderland series.
Book Two picks up where King of Spades (Book One) ended: Lyriope has run away from Nick to Italy. Being the possessive alphahole that he is, Nick follows her, finds her, and finally stakes his claim on his Queen.
The focus of this read is on the character development of the leads, which speaks to my earlier point as to whether this could have been consolidated into Books One or Three. It was worth reading the main characters coming to terms with their inevitable attraction. I certainly appreciate the super-spicy scenes interspersed between Nick and Lyriope's efforts to find common ground. They are incredibly hot and passionate, which is why the book has certainly earned its 4-🔥 spice rating. I also liked the parallel of Nick and Lyriope's character growth: They both needed to lower their guards and let someone in.
However, there is little movement in the plot, which leaves us wondering if small details in this read are meant as clues to the events coming in the final book. I am most certainly looking forward to the last installment, because it has set high expectations of action and suspense to close out this trilogy.
