BOOKWORM REVIEW: King of Spades by Alta Hensley

Lyriope Bailey is in trouble. Abandoned by her negligent parents, she is left holding the bag of a huge debt to the Russian mob, and they are looking to collect. She cannot exactly run to her biological father, who might be a powerful man in town but wants nothing to do with a daughter born with his mistress.
It seems that her only salvation is with the mysterious but powerful man who runs Wonderland, and when Nick Hudson decides to save her, he makes it known to Lyriope that he isn't doing it because of kindness or charity. He wants something in return, and that payment is her.
This read had suspense, drama, and a smidge of action, but what it had in spades -- pun intended -- was spice and tension between the two main characters. Nick just oozes seduction and appeal, and you almost feel bad for Lyriope because resistance on her part is just futile.
But resist she does so we get a tug-of-war that somewhat got frustrating toward the end. It was mostly because Lyriope cannot seem to comprehend the magnitude of danger she is in and made rash decisions that get her deeper into trouble.
This is the first of a series -- I am not sure if it is a duet, trilogy, or more -- and it does end in a cliffhanger. Nick is the main reason I am counting down to the next book, but I sure hope that we get Lyriope's character arc in the next installment.
