BOOKWORM REVIEW: The Reluctant Bride by Monica Murphy

Have you ever nervously watched the percent read, hoping that you would get some form of resolution to the building tension in a read?
Yeah, that was me..and this book.
The Reluctant Bride introduces us to Perry Constantine and Charlotte Lancaster. Born to powerful families, these two are unfortunate to the only options to their families' plan to merge. And it meant that they needed to marry each other against their will.
There is more to these families than meets the eye, however, and it seems that Perry and Charlotte are discovering those skeletons at the same time as we readers are. Will these secrets bring them together or tear them apart?
This read felt a lot like building the foundation of the trilogy -- which I did not find out that this was one until after I read it. The pace is slow, and there are a lot of details that may be important to the later books. Perry and Charlotte are involuntary pawns in their families' big game of chess, and both are a lot more similar than they think. They were mutinous children forced to suppress their rebellious ways, and there are moments in the book where these hidden traits are itching to get out.
If we're assessing the book alone, this would fall under slow-burn, but the tension and attraction between these two are quickly established and developed throughout the read. I am certainly hoping there would be more coming -- pun intended -- in Books Two and Three, because they are just hot.
If you are looking for romantic suspense with secretive families and arranged marriages, this trilogy totally falls under that category. Not a fan of cliffhangers? Book Two releases in June 2022 and Book Three in August 2022.
