BOOKWORM REVIEW: How to Lose a Duke in Ten Days by Kate McKinley

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5

I apparently have been craving spicy historical romances, and this short read just hit the spot.

Pippa wants nothing to do with Lucas, Duke of Arlington, but the man who had given her the cut direct just a few months before apparently believes they are to be engaged. She is determined to do all she can to change his mind about their engagement, but the more she tries to drive him away, the more she finds herself drawing closer to him..on her own accord.

I really enjoyed this novella, but it was a different take on historical romance. Pippa is a tradesman's daughter who really had little to zero chance of getting a respectable member of the ton for a husband, but here comes Lucas who is more progressive-minded than his peers. His father and his past have something to do with his shrewdness and lack of tolerance for nonsense, and that seems to fit with Pippa's want for more independence and less scrutiny. I love how Lucas' assertiveness to gain Pippa's attention and affection never wavers, but it has subtle changes as his motives shift from business to something more genuine.

If you are looking for a quick spicy read, this is a great pick, because the tension between these two hit the ground running from the first chapter and kept going until the epilogue.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Lucas Alexander, the ninth Duke of Arlington, is a man who gets what he wants. So when he sees the alluring Miss Pippa Welby from across a crowded ballroom, he vows to make her his. But the bold and spirited Pippa has sworn never to marry into the haute ton. Now Lucas must win her the only way he knows how—one wicked kiss at a time.

The daughter of a wealthy tradesman, Pippa has been sneered at by the upper echelons her entire life. So when the duke arrives on her doorstep with an invitation to her own engagement ball—to him—in ten days, Pippa hatches a daring plan. She must lose the duke before the ball, or risk losing her own heart.
