BOOKWORM REVIEW: Greed by Eva Charles

Wow. I mean, wow. This book was just epic, and I am already begging for Books Two and Three's release days to come. Right. Now.

Greed introduces us to Antonio Huntsman and Daniela D'Sousa. Two of them belong to powerful families that help keep the peace in a region overrun by competing vineyards. Antonio sits at the head of the foundation that oversees those vineyards.

Before Daniela's father died, he and Antonio made a secret deal to tie the Huntsmans and D'Sousas by arranging Antonio's marriage to Daniela. Antonio got more than what he bargained for when he discovers that Daniela is quite a handful. In the prequel novella, which is included in this book, Daniela ends up "escaping" Antonio along with her trusted maid and the maid's daughter. She ran off to the US, thinking that she has escaped Antonio's grasp.

The book opens six years later, and Daniela has been lured back to Portugal to wrap up the sale of her family's vineyard. Unfortunately for her, it was a trap. Antonio wants her back home to make good on her father's deal for the marriage. 

I love that this book was really a dark courtship between the two main characters. There was a lot of back-and-forth filled with bickering, insults, and most importantly a building of sensual tension that neither of them could deny. 

Antonio is a unique take on a dark anti-hero. His presence commands attention and loyalty, and he is vicious when serving justice in his region. But there is a caring and compassionate side buried underneath that anger and power that I found intriguing. 

Daniela is fierce and sassy as heroines come, but she is also vulnerable and imperfect. She makes impulsive mistakes, which puts her at odds with the always strategic Antonio, but her quirks also make her his perfect match.

Eva Charles weaved a fantastic mix of action, suspense, and super-spicy romance into an intriguing story. Yes, this is part of a trilogy, so you will run into a cliffhanger (and what a juicy cliffhanger it is). But like Antonio's patience for those interim six years, the waiting is worth it.
