Separated for months, Josh and Maggie are trying to reconcile but somehow struggle to do so. Despite couples therapy and Josh's attempts to become a better husband and father, something is standing in their way. Will they eventually overcome this emotional obstacle?
As someone who has been married for as long as Josh and Maggie have been, I felt this in my soul. Life gets in the way of keeping that connection with your partner, and if both don't work at it, your relationship becomes stagnant.
Daphne Elliott did a remarkable job in making their marital troubles so real. I was a Josh in my marriage, so I felt his frustration at not making any breakthroughs despite the massive strides he has made to make it work. And as someone who married someone like Maggie, I also understood her hesitation to be vulnerable to someone who hurt her before and her pent-up anger. It is incredibly hard to love someone whom you internally resented for years, and I loved how well that was done in this book.
And their chemistry. You understand why they loved, have loved, and continue to love each other. Their connection ranges from sweet to super-spicy, and it is amazing.
If you are looking for a second-chance holiday read with some angst, this is the right pick.
