BOOKWORM REVIEW: The Rancher and The Lady by Heather Slade

I really want to like this series, but I feel like it just does too much. This book especially was harder to rate, because I actually enjoyed the two parts of the book.
They just did not belong together.
So this is about Darrow's story. She is the youngest sister of the agents in the earlier books, and she's running away to the US after having her heart broken. Her refuge is a ranch owned by Z, one of the other agents her brothers work with, and his two kids -- Quint and Wren. Wren is hiding from Darrow's family because she left Darrow's brother after they fell in lust and love. (I told you it was a lot.)
And Quint is just Quint. Rancher. Cowboy. Rodeo guy.
The first part tackles the back-and-forth push-and-pull dance between Darrow and Quint. Neither are too eager to jump into any relationship, but they cannot help nor resist the connection they feel for each other. I liked Part One because it was a good cowboy romance story.
Part Two brings trouble to the King-Alexander Ranch as a result of Z and Darrow's brothers. Their secret agent business is bleeding into the US and into Texas, so Darrow follows the darker side of her family legacy. This part was fun because of the suspense and action.
The only problem with the two put together is that other than having the same characters, it really has no cohesion. If it were a movie, it was like watching Yellowstone in the first half which shifted quickly to a Jason Bourne movie in the latter section. I think if it stuck to one subgenre, I would have enjoyed it more.
