BOOKWORM REVIEW: Ghosted by Sarah Ready

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
SPICE: πŸ”₯πŸ”₯.5

I was not ready for this book. I thought I was in for a good time; after all, it is just a fun romcom about a woman who ends up living with a ghost.

I. Should. Have. Known. Better.

Jillian was hoping that the cheap New York apartment she took a chance on would not be so bad. Sure, the wall-to-wall mirrors scream 70s love den, but it is nothing a lot of Lysol spray and wipes cannot fix. Unfortunately for her, Lysol cannot fix her ghost problem.

Yes, Jillian Nejat is apparently sharing her apartment with a shirtless, gorgeous ghost named Daniel who likes to butt into her business. And he has a lot of opinions when it comes to her job and dating life, which seem to be more lifeless than he is.

Once she gets over the initial shock and annoyance at having a constant ghostly companion, they both find that there is more to their connection.

I really enjoyed this book (and audiobook). Sure, I had to suspend some belief that someone who is incapable of talking to men and has never been in a relationship (much less a physical one) could be qualified to be a relationship expert, but then again, it is the Daily Expose.

I love the arc of Jillian and Daniel's relationship. Sarah Ready draws us in on a journey with our main characters that organically transitions them from ghost/haunted strangers to friends to lovers. Along the way, we get to unpack mostly Jillian's history in the first act and then Daniel's in the second, and uncover layers of complexity that make them who they are.

Their chemistry was definitely sizzling, though the spicy moments were mostly in the medium (no pun intended) category. We got some ghost-human action (after all, isn't that why we picked this read?) and more.

My second favorite thing about this book is Jillian's network. Ready delivers hilarious subplots about her neighbor Fran, her physicist best friend Serena, and her ragtag group of co-workers that had me laughing, giggling, and crying (in a good way).

This read beautifully as a standalone, though news on the grapevine indicates this will be a series with Serena being featured next, and I cannot wait.

AUDIOBOOK NOTES: The book and audiobook were mostly done from Jillian's POV, and I love Sarah Naughton's reading of Jillian. Even though the book itself was long, Naughton drew us into a complete immersion in this book universe. I felt like she made key scenes in the book come to life, and I really liked that.

** I am voluntarily reviewing an advance copy of this book. Thank you to Sarah Ready, WW Crown, and NetGalley for providing an ARC. **

ABOUT THE BOOK

Jillian Nejat is the only dating and relationship expert on the planet who is incapable of speaking to men. If they’re living, if they’re breathing, it’s game over.

With her bank account at zero, her career a dumpster fire, and her dating life in a ten-year slump, she moves into a tiny, dirt-cheap NYC apartment.

Unfortunately, the apartment is already occupied.

Daniel (no-last-name) is a sexy, shirtless, six-pack wielding heartthrob who is also…dead.

He isn’t living. He isn’t breathing. He’s a ghost. He’s also the only man on the planet who Jillian can talk to.

Soon, Daniel’s convinced that it’s his afterlife mission to resurrect Jillian’s love life. He knows, if he helps her fall in love then he can move on. Jillian agrees. The last thing she needs is a Lothario ghost haunting her living room.

But then, one practice date leads to another, one confession leads to more, and suddenly Jillian fears she’s falling for the one man she can never have.
