BOOKWORM REVIEW: Something like Hate by Piper Rayne

Miles was supposed to have a fresh start in Chicago. While being traded from the Kingsmen was not his idea of a good time, he also looked at his new team as a clean slate he was looking for. What he did not expect was a dark blast from his past being in his new hometown, too.

Bryce was hoping for a new start in the Windy City also. Joining an elite sports magazine is the stepping stone she and her career need. Sure, she might be covering the local hockey team, but there is plenty of time to grow. When her assignment suddenly changed to the professional football team, she was not exactly thrilled because it meant getting close to Miles.

This read was a brilliant start to the series. I have loved the tension between Miles and Bryce from previous reads, and that tension just builds nicely at the beginning of this book. Piper Rayne provides us with an undeniable attraction that just sizzles on the pages and delivers on the spicy moments.

We get a nice helping of sports in this read (which I always enjoy); there is also a nice mystery that is organically integrated into the story.

This is the kickoff -- pun intended -- to the series, and Piper Rayne has set that bar high. There are so many stories they've previewed in this read, but serving us the Grizzlies lothario and an accidental pregnancy? Yes please.

How naïve to think it would end there because when the opportunity to write for a national magazine based in Chicago lands in my lap months later, I can’t turn it down. Sure, it’s a big city, but the sexual energy feels like a beacon between us the minute my plane lands.

To make matters worse, I end up having to take over the job of reporting exclusively on the Chicago Grizzlies. Which means traveling with the team, interviewing players, and pretty much having an all-access pass to their lives during the season.

Miles and I put up a great front, quickly hating on one another, but we both know it’s a lie. We also know the rules are simple. For me, don’t sleep with the subject of your articles. For him, don’t sleep with the journalist who can make or break your career.

I thought straight-laced Miles Cavanaugh followed all the rules… oh how wrong I was.
