BOOKWORM REVIEW: Makes the Heart Grow Fouler by Carrie Aarons

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
SPICE: πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

I love, love, love a spicy read with a grumpy reclusive rockstar. Pair that up with a sassy and determined journalist with a broken past, a healthy dose of angst, and Carrie Aaron's trademark prose?

We got ourselves a winner.

Dane has been hiding at his compound for years. The elusive musician has shut himself off from the world, and Margot gets the one-time chance to interview him.

Unfortunately for her, his best friend and publicist did not quite include him in the memo, so the man is almost feral at the sight of her, a member of the media, on his property.

Fortunately for her, he has made a deal to either make this interview happen or else, so she is stuck in his compound until she can squeeze some details from him. It is about as easy as squeezing water from a stone. When she volunteers information about her past as a peace offering, he finds himself lowering his guard. It is bad enough that he cannot seem to fight a growing physical attraction to this current bane of his existence; now he finds himself liking her, too.

I am always prepared for an emotional joyride with every Carrie Aarons read, and what I have come to learn is that while each ride is unique, I always have a good time. With this read, we get an emotional rollercoaster as we follow Margot and unpack the layers that make up the broody Dane. I love the organic progression of their relationship from adversarial to platonic to romantic. Like Margot, we start to fall in love with the cantankerous musician as we see a less growly side of him. I also love the development of Margot's connections with the important people in Dane's life. The chemistry between her and Dane's high-school-age daughter Shiloh just felt so natural.

The spice in this read is definitely hot, hot, hot. Dane brings the sexiness expected from a seasoned musician, and Margot compliments it nicely with her enthusiasm and sass.

We met Dane in Aarons' previous release Say You Love Me Again, and we meet some of the characters from that book in this one, but this can be read as a standalone.

If you have a soft spot for sexy curmudgeons with a heart of ice and the people who have the charisma to melt those hearts, this is a read for you.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Never meet your hero, because they’ll probably turn out to be a villain.

That thought didn’t even cross my mind when the magazine I work for assigned me to do a feature article on Dane, the greatest country singer of our generation. You know, the kind of celebrity who doesn’t require a last name because they’re that prolific.

Along with being one of my favorite artists, the notoriously private man has never given an interview in his twenty-year career, so this piece could make mine. Unfortunately, from the minute I step foot on his massive Texas compound, Dane is determined to break it.

Between his icy stares, lewd gestures, and mocking comments, the one week time table to ask him my questions comes and goes with zero answers. But for some reason, he won’t pull out of the article. And when he insists I move into his guest house in order to observe him, since he refuses to sit down one-on-one, I have no choice but to suck it up for my job.

After the year I’ve had, and the outside world I no longer want any part of, the seclusion is almost welcome. That is, if it didn’t include a sexy recluse who seems hellbent on messing with me. Working with someone I despise wouldn’t be so hard if it meant going home at the end of the day.

From his checkered past, to the rumors about his love life, to the fact that he vanished from the music scene five years ago, to the teenage daughter he’s raised as a single father her entire life … there is so much to unpack in order to learn the truth about the man buried beneath the ink covering his skin.

But the real danger comes when Dane drops the curtain completely, allowing me to see every side of him. Because it makes me want to show him every damaged part of myself.

Except two such opposite, but equally broken, people can never find a happily ever after. Especially since a villain has no heart. So what do I do when the fallen hero I can’t have wants to give me his?

MEET CARRIE AARONS

Author of romance novels such as Fool Me Twice and Love at First Fight, Carrie Aarons writes books that are just as swoon-worthy as they are sarcastic. A former journalist, she prefers the love stories of her imagination, and the athleisure dress code, much better.

When she isn't writing, Carrie is busy binging reality TV, having a love/hate relationship with cardio, and trying not to burn dinner. She lives in the suburbs of New Jersey with her husband, two children and ninety-pound rescue pup.
