BOOKWORM REVIEW: One Look by Lena Hendrix

A book that can hype itself and the series it kicks off? YES PLEASE.

This read is the first of The Sullivan Family series, and it is a banger. Wyatt Sullivan, the single-parenting, former NFL-quarterbacking, currently college-coaching prodigal son, is temporarily back in town with his young daughter Penny. It is a compromise to bring together a severed family. But juggling a young child, a new coaching gig, and three wayward players to keep in line during the summer is too much for the coach to handle. 

Cue Lark Butler, a struggling actress who is new in town. She is a bit of a mess. She has been hired to cry at a funeral, which sends the gossip mill churning. Her accident-prone ways have had her café bosses cringing every time she comes near anything breakable. Did I mention she lives next door to Wyatt?

When Wyatt had to hire her to help with his overflowing plate, the close proximity brings out a connection that these complete opposites did not anticipate.

Love, love, love this read. Wyatt and Lark have amazing chemistry from the get-go that wonderfully progresses into a spicy connection in the bedroom, the kitchen, the shower, the lake..you get my drift. Their interactions with Wyatt's daughter Penny are also full of love and care and witty banter. There is a brilliant scene in one of the epilogues that had me laughing because Wyatt and Lark's contrasting reactions were peak-parent. 

What stole the show for me, however, is the entire Sullivan clan. Even though they have been apart for a while, they easily come together and prove to have each other's back. I adore that each one has their own distinct personality. More so, Lena Hendrix gives us the right amount of teasers into the Sullivan siblings' stories that will whet some bookworm appetites. I am counting down to all of them.

This book also introduces us to the rivalry between the Sullivans and the Kings, which definitely had me intrigued. I look forward to learning more about the rivalry in future reads. ::cough:: Duke ::cough::

This single-parent read is a brilliant start to the series. If you adore big families in small towns, this is a must-read.

But somewhere between offering her condolences and crawling out of a literal grave site, we’ve found ourselves tangled in the drama of Outtatowner, Michigan–my coastal hometown with a decades-old feud and two aunties determined to end it.

I’m finally putting down roots so my daughter has a normal life and I need to forget about Lark. Forget the way it felt the night we kissed or what it’s like to finally take something just for me. But when those sparks ignited, it was more intense than either of us bargained for.

Trouble is, I can’t trust her, and she never stays.

She’s burning my carefully laid plans to the ground and all it took was one look.
