BOOKWORM REVIEW: Christmas Chaos by Evie Alexander and Kelly Kay

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5

If comedic chaos was a thing, Evie Alexander and Kelly Kay are certainly masters of it. This third installment of their holiday-based collaboration delivers the mayhem and laughs I've come to expect from this series.

Alexander's novella follows her Kinloch series main characters as they prepare not only for the holidays at the Kinloch Castle but also for the arrival of a surprise little bundle of joy. Whereas Zoe is blissfully embracing the havoc created by her plans to holiday up the Castle and by the unexpected bun in her oven, we are treated to Rory's internal freakouts about becoming Santa (figuratively) and a Dad.

Kay's side of this collaboration brings back Tabi and Bax. Tabi wants a family so bad, but their struggles with infertility continue to plague the couple. When they try their hand at fostering, they find that familial love does not require shared DNA.

While these two novellas definitely brought their comedic A-game, I love that the stories were intertwined with tackling serious themes without losing reading pace. We do get steamy romance from established couples, but the overarching theme -- appropriate for the holiday -- is family. We get that not just from their offsprings -- birthed or adopted -- but also from unexpected places. They may have been complete strangers who happen to get stranded together in the airport, but I love that Rory and Tabi lean on each other for support in their respective stories.

This book has two amazing stories that will bring on the laughter, romance, and love. If you are looking for a good laugh during this holiday season, this is a great pick.

ABOUT THE BOOK

One Christmas, two couples, utter chaos. These laugh-out-loud novellas are hotter than chestnuts roasting on an open fire!

No Way in a Manger - by Evie Alexander
Rory’s seen battle, conquered the wiles of the Scottish Highlands, and won Zoe’s heart. But now he faces his biggest challenge of all, Christmas at the castle and a heavily pregnant wife who wants everything to be perfect. The holidays should be relaxing, and having a baby’s easy, right? But with wayward in-laws, an out-of-control cow and mad Santa getting in the way, nothing is going to plan…

No Crib and No Bed - by Kelly Kay
Tabi Aganos has put her belief in miracles behind her and redirected her life to focus on her husband, Bax, the winery they’ve built, and fixing up her beloved old farmhouse. They have everything in place for the perfect Holiday, until one hot night sends their plans crashing through the floor. But when family and friends pitch in to help, and Santa brings some unexpectedly magical gifts, their Christmas turns from chaos into joy.

Evie and Kelly’s Holiday Disasters are a series of hot and hilarious romantic comedies with interconnected characters, focusing on one holiday and one trope at a time. No cheating, no cliff-hangers, and a guaranteed happily ever after (HEA).

MEET EVIE ALEXANDER

Evie Alexander is the author of sexy romantic comedies with a very British sense of humour.

Evie takes a method approach to her work, believing her capacity to repeatedly fail at life and love is what has given her such a rich supply of material for her writing.

Her interests include reading, eating, saving the world, and fantasising about people who only exist between the pages of her books.

The first novel in her Kinloch series; Highland Games was released in 2021. Hollywood Games, Kissing Games, and Musical Games are releasing in 2022.

MEET KELLY KAY

I used to create "dreams" with my best friend growing up. We'd each pick a boy we liked, then we'd write down a meet-cute that always ended with a happily ever after.

Now I get to dream every day, although it's a little steamier these days. And I've discovered I can and will write anywhere I can. Keep tuned to Instagram to see all the times I fit in a sentence or two.

I'm a writer, married to a writer, mother of a creative dynamo of a nine-year-old boy and currently a little sleepy. I'm a klutz and goofball and love lipstick as much as my Chuck Taylors.

Good things in the world: pepperoni pizza, Flair pens*, wine, coffee, laughing with my friends until my stomach hurts, a musician at the top of their game, getting lost somewhere I've never been, matinee movies on a weekday, the Chicago Cubs, a fresh new notebook full of possibilities, bourbon on a cold night, Fantasy Football, witty men, walking through the local zoo in the rain and that moment when a character clicks in and begins to write their own adventure. I'm just the pen.
