BOOKWORM REVIEW: Memories of a Life by Jewel E. Ann

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
STEAM: πŸ”₯πŸ”₯.5

I blame this book for a wicked slump that may have been one of my longest. (Also, this review is so hard to write without giving away spoilers, TBH.)

This is Book Two of a duet, so we begin where Book One ended. Colten and Josie are supposed to be planning for their HEA, but Josie has been having nightmares and she believes them to be memories, not figments of her imagination. How can the two navigate Josie's worries without compromising their relationship?

I knew I was in for a ride that I did not ask for but somehow enjoyed when Part 1 ended the way it did. The story has gone off the traditional romance rails and into a weird paranormal territory, but yet like a possible train wreck, I could not just look away -- or more accurately put down the book. It definitely has dark themes (so check out the content warnings in the reviews) and it is incredibly angsty.

I am going to be honest: I did not like Josie. She was not relatable, and I am not referring to her weird dreams. I felt like Colt carried the weight of their love story. And man, is he fantastic! He is the book boyfriend you want to have, and his character makes Josie's unlikeable qualities even more damning.

The pacing of the book is great, and Jewel E. Ann does a great job of building a world that sucks you right in. I was at the edge of my seat trying to untangle what's going on the whole time while feeling so heartbroken for the main characters (mostly Colt). The end, however, left me wanting, even with an epilogue. If I were to continue with my wild ride analogy, it was like a crazy ride you did not expect -- but enjoyed -- and then the driver just stops and tells you to get out in the middle of nowhere.

** I am voluntarily reviewing an advance copy of this book. Thank you to Jewel E. Ann and Valentine PR and Literary Management for providing an ARC. **

ABOUT THE BOOK

The girl I met when we were nine is now the woman who said "yes" to being my wife.
But Josie's not planning our wedding; she's too consumed by things that happened over a century ago.
She has terrible dreams and unrelenting visions of the unspeakable. I believe her, but I don't understand her.
If I can't understand her, I can't stop her.
If I can't stop her, I can't save us.
And without us ... well, I can't imagine that world.
