BOOKWORM REVIEW: Henry and Me by Sasha Clinton

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This was an interesting romantic exploration about growing up and second chances.

Max Anderson's life is not turning out the way she had expected. She should be well on her way to getting her first Oscar by now; instead, she's being dragged by her sister-in-law to an interview to be a housekeeper and nanny. And it turns out that her new boss was someone she phenomenally humiliated in college.

Henry Stone does not seem to hold a grudge, however. The handsome (and rich) engineer needs someone who can go toe-to-toe with his precocious young charge, and Max seems to be the right fit for the job (even if she is far from it on paper).

The longer Max works for Henry, the more she finds herself wanting to get to know her boss better. But she really needs this job right now, and there is no way he finds her attractive like he did in college. Right?

The book is written mainly from Max's perspective, and I enjoyed that she did not fit the typical FMC trope. She had flaws for sure, and she owned them and tried to address them as much as she could. They did not give her a pass for not having experience in her job, and the resilience and determination made me love her even more.

She is a hot mess if her thoughts are anything to go by, but there is rhyme and reason to her anxious mind (as we come to find out). I also love that Henry does not try to change it, but is rather enamored by it. Their chemistry simmered from the interview and did not let up at all throughout the read. I especially thought the spicy moment involving communication was especially HOT.

I love the equally quirky ensemble cast. Max's sister-in-law Jiah and Henry's nephew Lucien stole the spotlight every time they were involved. I adore the development of Lucien and Max's relationship; their fun banter and Lucien's eventual trust in Max were fun to read about.

This is a standalone read, but grown Lucien does get his HEA in the next book, and I cannot wait to read it.

ABOUT THE BOOK

When we were in college, Henry Stone asked me out and I shot him down in the most humiliating way possible.

He was a nerd and I was the golden girl of the theatre society, destined to make it big in Hollywood, so how could there be anything between us?

Now six years later, as an out-of-work actress who has to take on a housekeeping job to stay afloat, I run into him again—and boy, has he made it big.

As I begin to clean his house and take care of his precocious nephew, I realize how wrong I was about him. He’s sexy, smart, kind, everything I never though he would be.

But I have demons that he can’t fight. Demons that keep me away from love.

One thing’s for sure: This housekeeper-gig is going to be the hardest role of my life.
