BOOKWORM REVIEW: Mansplainer by Avery Flynn

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
STEAM: πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

Nash Beckett has a nasty habit. It comes from good intentions, but having been responsible for his family for so long, he cannot seem to relinquish control. Now the last man standing in his bet to win Grandma's Gift, it is his turn to go on six dates. Too bad there is no rule that it could not be his fake wife.

Michelle Finch needs a husband. To inherit from her father's will and escape her toxic family, she needs someone willing to get married, even if love is not involved. In her forties and having dealt with the unsolicited opinions about her size, she has come to terms that love just isn't in the cards for her. Or is it?

I really enjoyed this read. Nash and Chelle's journey from fake to real was adorable to watch. I love the juxtaposition between their families. While the Becketts are indeed chaotic, Nash -- and we readers -- start to understand that family is not perfect. The good ones will have your back, and it is up to you to set boundaries for the ones who are not.

Chelle stole the spotlight for me in this story. Despite the adversities life has dealt her, she remains true to herself and calls out Nash on his bad habit as needed. Descriptions attributed to her could have been better, though, and that's why this was not a true five-star for me.

The chemistry between these two also had a development arc, and the outcome is spicy, spicy, spicy. As someone who is closer to Chelle than many FMCs, I appreciated the representation and that Avery Flynn did not shy away from the spicy moments.

This is the last of The Last Man Standing series. It can be read as a standalone. You get enough context to understand the premise of the bet and how the other two cousins have fared. Should you read the other two before reading this? I highly recommend it.

** I am voluntarily reviewing an advance copy of this book. Thank you to Avery Flynn, Entangled Publishing, and Grey's Promotions for providing an ARC. **

ABOUT THE BOOK

As the only Beckett cousin who is still unattached, I'm a shoo-in to win the bet with my cousins to be the last man blissfully not in love by Christmas. Of course, I know they're still going to make me follow the rules of our bet and go on six dates with the same woman—but I've figured out a way out of that too. I'm getting married. Is it love? Not even close. Chelle Finch needs a temporary husband and I need to win this bet. We agree to put a ring on it knowing that in six months this marriage of convenience will end in divorce. Except, somehow dating my wife has me realizing that I don't ever want to take this ring off if it means losing her.

What does the guy who can talk his way out of anything have to do to sweet talk his temporary wife into forever?
