BOOKWORM REVIEW: The Dealmaker by Jessica Peterson
Did I get here because of the one-room trope? Yes. Did I stay for the spicy enemies-to-lovers vibe? Yeah, I did.
Nora is fighting against odds in a male-dominated world. She wants to get a coveted promotion within her financial firm, but it turns out that she is not the only one in the running. Theo is her competition in every way, including banter, which ignites the sexual tension between these two. Could they put their over-competitiveness aside to see the connection in front of them?
I love that Jessica Peterson does not hold back from exploring the misogyny hard-working women encounter in a male-centric profession. Nora has a steeper hill to climb than Theo and her other male colleagues because she is a woman, because she is from a well-connected family. She recognizes the power imbalance and works hard and sets high standards for herself despite this.
Theo's story complements Nora's well. We are introduced to the Wall Street Legend first; he is cocky, self-assured, and ready to antagonize Nora. Jessica Peterson does a wonderful job in getting us to peel back his layers and see why he is the way he is.
As someone with an MBA, I enjoyed the intricate details about the financial investing world, but some folks might find it overwhelming.
While the steam for the most part was on par, I am giving an extra 0.5 points for that shaving scene. Talk about a thirst trap scene.
If you are into rivals-to-lovers or enemies-to-lovers, this is a fantastic pick. Have fun enjoying the banter and the spice!
