BOOKWORM REVIEW: The Mrs. Degree by Sara Ney

Life will give you a second chance often when you least expect it.

Jack Jennings has always wondered why his college girlfriend Penelope Halbrook left without a word or a trace. He thought that life was good for them; he was well on his way to being drafted in the NFL and they were so much in love. When he started having wild dreams about Penelope that he could not shake, he tracks her down to get some answers about their past.

It turns out that she left with a big secret. She got pregnant in college and did not want to hold him back, so she left and raised Skipper on her own with the help of her family, especially her brother Davis. Can Jack and Penelope reconcile after years of being apart with this big secret over their heads?

Secret baby tropes are always really hard to find relatable because I just cannot imagine keeping someone's child from them. That dilemma, however, is at the core of this book, and Sara Ney does a great job of exploring the consequences and moral dilemmas around this trope. It turns out that sometimes good intentions could lead to miscommunication and heartache.

Jack was the star of this book for me. I love his calm demeanor, which helps in taking the news in stride. He is also fantastic with Skipper for someone who missed seven years of her life. There was never a doubt that his love for Penelope was true in college and remains strong to the present day.

While the emotional reconnection is always great, we know that we're also here for the physical aspect, and Jack and Pen most definitely bring the heat.

This is the second book in Sara Ney's Accidentally in Love series. While it does include characters from the first book, it can be read as a standalone.

ABOUT THE BOOK

I never thought I would get pregnant in college.

When I did, I thought leaving Jack Jennings was doing him a giant favor—he had a bright future ahead of him as a football star—the last thing he needed was me and a baby standing in his way of his dreams.

Honestly? I figured he would eventually forget about me.

I would raise our child in secret and watch Jack on television, and the pain of what I’d done to him would heal.

The last person I expected to see on my brother's doorstep seven years later was Jack; obviously, or I wouldn’t have answered it.

A superstitious athlete, dreams were keeping him awake at night that were preventing him from excelling on the field—dreams he was hoping I could make…disappear.

He looked so good. So much older.

Kind. Handsome.

Turns out, he hadn’t forgotten about me either, and he hadn’t put our past behind him.
