BOOKWORM REVIEW: Wretched by Emily McIntire

Have you ever been wary about ordering a deconstructed version of your favorite comfort food, but you jump in anyway and find that it is a million times better than the original?

I had loved Wizard of Oz since I was a kid. Read the books (the original and Wicked), watched every movie version, and cried like a baby at the first showing of Wicked. To this day, I hum Defying Gravity every time I needed a little courage.

Reading Emily McIntire's deconstruction of my favorite childhood story felt like Cupid's arrow to my heart. Every detail, every Easter egg. The modern version of what I always wanted the Wicked Witch of the West to be. She has woven all of that together into this amazing dark story about star-crossed enemies-turned-lovers, and this book will go down as one of my favorites this year, if not of all time.

Nicholas is going undercover to find out who is supplying the Westerly family with the opiates that have captured Kinland in its addictive grasp and are now slowly making their way to Chicago.

But on his last night before going under, he runs into a captivating stranger who seems to push his right buttons. They have a fling that seems to burn into his very core. But it turns out the woman of his dreams is none other than Westerly daughter Eveline.

The emotional and physical tug-of-war between these two is a game I would watch over and over again. Two powerhouses in cunning and strategy, they are the epitome of the ends in the spectrum of good and evil. But not everything is as it may seem.

While Nick portrays the tortured hero so well, it is Eveline that steals the spotlight. She is unapologetically fierce and focused, and if I ever wanted someone on my side in a fight, she is a definite first pick for my champion. And their chemistry? It will set your Kindles or paper copies on fire. There are definitely some dirty and spicy moments in this read, so have that water handy because it will leave you thirsty AF.

Like the other books in this series, the suspense will leave you at the edge of your seat. Will there be a happily ever after? There is no clear view of the horizon, so you will need to buckle in and enjoy the rocky ride until you get there. And just like any dark romance read, it is best to check the trigger warnings before proceeding.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Once Upon A Time,
there was a wicked girl.
She lost everything that mattered,
causing darkness to unfurl.
Impulsive and intelligent,
she helped her family name grow strong.
But then one day a man without a heart came along.
An undercover agent, meant to spy and bring back tips.
Following down her hidden path of faded yellow bricks.
She hated him, he wanted her;
she was too good to be true.
But a woman can be great...
and terrible too.
