BOOKWORM REVIEW: Campus God by Jennifer Sucevic

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5

Campus God was a fun read about real-life enemies turned virtual friends that eventually became lovers.

Brooke hated Crosby with every fiber of her being. He had made her life miserable while she was dating his friend and teammate Andrew, and while she expected little from him, he was among the many who did not warn her that her boyfriend was a serial cheater.

After cutting ties with Andrew and trying to avoid all things Western football, she cannot seem to shake Crosby off. The irritating man always seems to be around and somehow has become more personable to her.

Her only reprieve is her virtual friend Chris, with whom she has had more connection than Andrew or any other man in her life. He is smart, caring, and understanding, and the faceless and shirtless selfies are a nice bonus. She has been trying to meet him in real life to no avail. Is it because he is not who he seems to be? What would Brooke do if she were to find out that her virtual soulmate turns out to be the guy who had bullied her and whom she hated with a fire of a thousand suns?

I love Crosby and Brooke individually. Crosby is kind and loyal. Albeit a bit misguided with his loyalty, Crosby means well. His ruthless teasing of Brooke was a foolish way of keeping his attraction to her at bay. Brooke is smart and friendly. Despite the adversities she faces with the people in her life, she rises above them. She sets firm and strong boundaries, especially with Andrew and Crosby. However, their chemistry together just renders Crosby's attempts futile and breaks down Brooke's walls.

In the age of catfishing, people get a little leery of meeting and getting to know someone virtually before seeing them in person. But there is something liberating about having that shield that allows you to be yourself with ease and without judgment. In Crosby and Brooke's case, getting to know each other virtually allowed them to be more forthcoming with each other without their history.

I really enjoyed the get-to-know aspect of this book, and while I do get wary of love triangles, I did like the dynamic of Brooke juggling her relationship with Crosby and "Chris" and how she ended up being true to herself in the end. Their spicy moments were the cream on top of their great connection; Crosby definitely know how to turn it up.

I just wished that slimy Andrew had more of a comeuppance. Is it too much to ask for his little friend to fall off?

This book is the fourth in the Campus Series, but it can be read as a standalone. There are mentions of characters from previous books, but Jennifer Sucevic did a great job of introducing them and integrating them into the story without making new-to-series readers feel overwhelmed.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Crosby Rhodes is considered a god when it comes to Western Wildcats football.

And who knows, he might just be one.  There’s certainly no shortage of girls on campus who agree with the sentiment.  They swoon over his pretty face, dark messy hair, and hard body honed from years of lifting and two-a-day practices.  That alone makes him catnip for the female species.

Add a lip ring and surly disposition to the package and you can understand what all the fuss is about.
Would I be included in that majority?

Hell, no.

As far as I’m concerned, Crosby can eat shit and die.  The guy is a major jerk.  Not to mention, a pain in my assets.  And that’s putting it nicely.  For reasons I’ve never understood, he goes out of his way to humiliate and hurt me.  His barbed comments are always a direct hit before exploding on impact.
I’d love to know what I did to elicit such hatred but that would involve conversing with him and I refuse to do that.  There’s only one more semester before graduation.  Surely, we can get through the next six months without coming to blows.

That’s the hope, anyway.

Which is exactly why I’m thrown off guard when my nemesis pulls me aside and suggests a truce.  Do I necessarily trust him after everything he’s put me through?

Nope.  For the time being, I’ll agree so there can once again be peace in the kingdom all the while keeping him at a firm distance.  Except that turns out to be impossible.  Everywhere I go, there he is.  It’s like I can’t get away from him.  More shocking than that, he’s actually being nice.

If stomping out the underlying attraction that constantly flared to life between us was difficult before, it’s all but impossible now.  But that’s exactly what I’m going to do.  I’ve been burned by one athlete, I’ll be damned if I allow it to happen again.
