BOOKWORM REVIEW: The Never King by Nikki St. Crowe

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5

This is not Peter Pan as you know it.  Nikki St. Crowe took the Neverland canon and gave more mystery, suspense, and spice, and I am here for it.

Winnie Darling is on borrowed time. On the 18th birthday of all Darling women, they disappear without a trace. They eventually come back, but they are never the same and are mostly broken when they return. For years, Winnie's mother has prepared her for this day, seeking out everyone and anyone who would try to break this curse. Even when they could not afford it, Merry sunk so much of their money into what is most likely snake oil when it comes to protecting Winnie from the fate that awaits her.

On her 18th birthday, Peter Pan comes to take Winnie away to Neverland where she meets his inner circle of Lost Boys: twins Kas and Bash and the broody Vane. All of them have been trying for years to find Peter's shadow, and they believe a Darling descendant could unlock the secret as to where it is. Could Winnie be the key, or is she just another Darling pawn set to break before she goes back to the real world?

This book was so hard to put down. The story had a great pace and kept me riveted from the first page to the last. Nikki St. Crowe does a fantastic job of keeping us guessing the mystery around what has happened in Neverland while infusing the right amount of sizzling spice between Winnie, Pan, and his Lost Boys.

This is the first of the Vicious Lost Boys series, and it will end with a cliffhanger that will blow your mind. It is also a dark reverse harem romance, so heed the trigger warnings before jumping in.

If you love dark retellings of your favorite fairy tales, I highly recommend picking this book up.

ABOUT THE BOOK

The stories were all wrong — Hook was never the villain.

For two centuries, all of the Darling women have disappeared on their 18th birthday. Sometimes they’re gone for only a day, some a week or a month. But they always return broken.

Now, on the afternoon of my 18th birthday, my mother is running around the house making sure all the windows are barred and the doors locked.

But it’s pointless.

Because when night falls, he comes for me. And this time, the Never King and the Lost Boys aren’t willing to let me go.

NOTE: The Never King is a reimagining of Peter and Wendy. Characters have been aged up for this darker, grittier version. If you like your enemies to lovers romance with hot, ruthless, morally gray love interests, you’ll enjoy The Never King and the Lost Boys. You can expect hate kissing, fighting, bickering, and ‘touch her and I’ll unalive you’ vibes. Book one ends on a cliff.
