BOOKWORM REVIEW: Scarred by Emily McIntire

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Emily McIntire must be King Midas, because everything she makes is literary gold. Or in the case of Scarred, it is literary black and gold.

Sara is being sent to Saxum to marry the King. This arranged marriage is part of her family's plot to avenge her father's death, and Sara is being sent to collect the lives of those who had a hand in that, especially the king. The only person she did not account for in her plans is Prince Tristan -- the scarred prince -- and no matter how they try to pull from one another, something deeper seems to draw them closer.

Like Tristan and Sara, I too was torn. I wanted to devour this book in one sitting but never wanted it to end. Emily McIntire has this bewitching power to draw you into her books, makes you adore the morally grey characters from the get-go, and drags you into this roller coaster of emotions. And have you begging to do it again at the end of the ride.

Tristan is an immediate addition to my 2022 list of book boyfriends. He is introduced to us as rude and deliciously condescending, but we love him for it anyway. He hides his wit and calculating brain behind an aloof and careless demeanor, and he possesses charisma for days that will have us smirking along with him as he does what villains do best: bad, bad, bad things.

I love the parallel between him and Sara. Beneath the proper princess is a vengeful fighter who is willing to do what it takes to get retribution. She too is cunning, flipping social misogyny on its ear by using the "seen, not heard" treatment of everyone else around her to get the information she needs.

Like Hooked, the twists and turns in this book are plentiful, but the pacing and development are so well done that they will leave you excited, not dizzy. As someone who holds The Lion King near and dear to her heart, the Easter Eggs were fantastically clever.

There are several triggers, so head the trigger warning at the beginning of the book. But if you love dark romance, especially dark royal romance, you would not want to miss this one. It is a definite addition to Top Books of 2022 for me.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Once Upon A Time,
there was a king who passed.
He left behind two sons,
one beloved and one outcast.
The older of the two was set to take the throne.
But before he could, he had to find a queen to call his own.
The younger one was known to be unruly and unhinged.
The chosen queen was warned to keep far away from him.
Beautiful and cunning, in the light is where she stayed.
But late at night it was the shadowed lands in which she played.
Mistakes were made and secrets forged; forgetting duty and her sense.
And while the new king had her hand,
her heart belonged to the scarred prince.
