BOOKWORM REVIEW: The Hustler by Gina Azzi

This book serves as a wonderful reminder that life is a windy and bumpy path to a happy ending. The adversities and challenges you face along the way will shape you to be the person you are meant to be, especially for The One.

The eighth book in the Boston Hawks Hockey series features Theo and Sofia. Sofia is counting down the days she can leave Maui and her snobby ex-fiancé's family. While overseeing her last wedding event, she meets Theo. They immediately hit it off and agree to have some short-term fun before she leaves. While they had a fantastic connection, Sofia discovers that Theo has not been completely forthcoming with who he is: He is also known as Eddie Sims, the troubled wingman for the Boston Hawks. 

Theo loves his family but hates being judged by their wealth and fame. He assumes a different name to play hockey, fearing his teammates would judge him. After Sofia runs off in Maui, it turns out her brother is his new teammate, and he is pleasantly surprised to run into her again in Boston. 

I really enjoyed going through the character arcs for these two, because Gina Azzi did a great job in making their vulnerabilities so relatable. Sofia's distrust and skepticism were even more heartbreaking as we read her breakup and eventually learn about her past. The weight of his family's legacy on Theo was tied in nicely to his destructive behavior in the previous books. The twisting in the ending tied all of these together neatly.

This continued the wonderful theme of the series where we are drawn in for the hockey romance but are left with something more. In this case, it was finding redemption with each other. The chemistry between the two did not feel rushed. It followed a nice progression from strangers to one-night flings to friends to lovers. 

I am sad that this series is coming to a close soon. It has been a refreshing and wonderful ride, and I cannot wait for The Score Keeper.
