BOOKWORM REVIEW: Rescued by Her Enemy by January Bell

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5

Amazing world-building, adrenaline-inducing action, and spicy romance from the word GO. Rescued by Her Enemy kicks off the Neon Renegades series and it did not come to play.

Caro is an Impericorps Cymech assassin, a killing machine built from a human base and enhanced with nanobots and other Impericorps technology to withstand most impossible situations and get the assignment done. She is ruthless but tired of being under the Impericorps' control.

Riker is her Impericorps handler tasked with making sure she gets the job done. Forced to work together under brutal circumstances, Caro has grown to detest Riker with an intensity of seven suns.

When an assignment goes wrong, Riker ends up rescuing Caro and bringing her to his home, where they face different problems altogether.

One of the things I love about great SFR is the relatability of the characters. Despite a different world, their struggles are so real and palpable that we commiserate with them in times of pain and cheer for them when happy things happen. January Bell does that so well with Caro and Riker.

I felt Caro's back-and-forth struggle on whether she identifies herself as human or machine. As someone who has been brainwashed to perform as an emotionless assassin, her biggest challenge is dealing with all of the feelings that is hitting her head and her chest, especially when it comes to Riker. And because life as a Cymech was not hard enough, she had to navigate around her newfound emotions as they are dealing with more adversity. Talk about trying to fly a Mongrel while trying to repair it.

Riker's mission has been to protect Caro at all cost. I love that he works so incredibly hard at it despite dealing with his own set of baggage. The tension between these two has been evident since he was just a voice in her ear, but face-to-face, that tension is glowing brighter than the seven suns of the Rim.

This book kicks off the series, but it can work as a standalone. I love the twists and turns, and I am looking forward to reading the stories of the other Neon Renegades. I just wished their introduction toward the end of the book was not so overwhelming, but it does not take away from how amazing this book is.

If you're looking for action and romance wrapped up in a wonderful science fiction world, this is a must-pick for you.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Love was never part of the plan.

I learned the hard way that men aren't to be trusted.

My ex sold me out for hacking the crime boss on our space station, and he made me a prisoner under 'round the clock surveillance. My only friends are an old cymech wolf unit and the AI I secretly built to help me escape.

When my SOS pings to orbiting ships are discovered, a new guard, Fintan, is assigned to live with me 24/7. And there's one more problem: Fintan's a massive, warrior-class cymech. Except, he doesn't seem to be completely under the crime boss' control.

When Fintan springs me from my prison, we're forced to work together to out-maneuver the station crime boss and get space side as fast as possible. Fintan's like no one I've ever met, and I'm falling fast.

My brain knows I can't trust when it comes to men.

My heart never seemed to learn that lesson.

Hard Drive is a steamy sci fi adventure romance for adults. This book is a standalone with a HEA in the world of Neon Renegades, so you can read it by itself or after book one.
