If you have been seeing my reviews about The Filthy Rich Americans series, you know how firmly planted I am within Team Macalister Hale, so I was nervous and excited about reading The Redemption.
Nikki Sloane did not disappoint. The Redemption was everything I had hoped for Macalister and so much more.
The book opens two years after The Deception ends. Macalister has been released from jail and is trying to get back into the good graces of Cape Hill. His relationships with his sons and daughter-in-law are shaky at best, so allies are few and far in-between. But Macalister is no stranger to hard work.
Enter Sophia Alby, the gossip-whisperer of Cape Hill. She wants to make a deal with the devil and is willing to play games in hell to do it. We get glimpses of her from previous books, but Book 4 is where she absolutely shines. She's feisty, cunning, and fearless. I knew she is going to be a great match for Macalister when she turns the tables on him and plays word games like he does when striking deals.
One of the many favorite things I love about this book is that Macalister's redemption is not out-of-character. Nikki Sloane does an amazing job in tying the motivations of his actions from the previous three books to his vulnerabilities in this one. He is fascinated by but struggles with emotions. He strives to ensure his sons do well in life with minimal threats to their birthright, but he does not know how to communicate with them any other way.
And these two are just 🔥🔥🔥. I knew Macalister was a spicy character -- I am still recovering from the mirror scene in The Deception. But I love that Sophia owns her sexuality and knows her boundaries and that she has a few spicy tricks of her own.
The book hangover from this is REAL, and I will miss Macalister as he takes a backseat to Vance's story in The Temptation.
