Doctor Scandalous is the first release in J. Saman's new series. The story begins with Oliver witnessing one of his former classmates bullying Amelia, a former scholarship kid, at his school reunion. He sweeps in to save her from unwarranted vitriol by pretending to be her beau. Amelia plays along, but as she plans to leave after said bully goes away, Oliver convinces her to attend the party and pretend to be his fiancé.
Their ruse is a success with Oliver being able to fend off his crazy ex and Amelia fitting in with his friends. Unfortunately, the pretense went viral, so now Oliver and Amelia have to prolong their fake engagement to appease family and the media.
J. Saman's writing compels you to sympathize deeply with the characters. You feel their hurt, their excitement, and their fears. This is why for two people with extremely heavy baggage, Oliver and Amelia are still so relatable.
I always love tough, resilient heroines, and Amelia embodies this. But she also has certain vulnerabilities that anyone who has been bullied or did not fit in, could empathize with. I admire her dedication to her sister Layla, persevering through adversities at work to put food on the table.
Oliver is just lovable. He is sweet, kind, compassionate. He loves so fiercely, and while that love has been limited to his family since his own heartbreak, he throws himself into it 100%. I especially love that his connection to Layla was not an afterthought. Given that Amelia had dedicated a lot of years into caring for her sister, having a great rapport with Layla was important, and I was glad that it was so well integrated into the story.
And boy, can he talk dirty! Those scenes were super-hot before they even got their clothes off, thanks to Oliver's filthy, filthy mouth.
Even if you're skeptical of fake relationship tropes, I still recommend picking up this book. The banter, the feels, and the spice are worth the one-click.
