BOOKWORM REVIEW: Captured in the Chaos by Opal Fairchild

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5

This novella kicks off Opal Fairchild's series which is slated for release in early 2022.  Talk about starting off with a bang. (The explosive kind -- the horizontal kind actually starts much later in the read.)

Katie is a local reporter in Austin anxiously waiting for her big break. She has been unhappy with weak coverage assignments from her editor, so when spaceships start to hover over cities around the country, she convinces her editor to assign her to report on these mysterious flying objects.

Unfortunately, this puts her in the thick of a violent alien takeover. Captured by the hostile extraterrestrials, she begins to lose hope until one of them helps break her out of captivity.

This short read leaves you craving for the rest of the series. In the short time that Katie and her rescuer Makai spends together, Opal does a fantastic job in quickly building a believable deep connection based on mutual respect and attraction.

The world building is amazingly vivid for an introduction. We feel the fear, the anxiety, and the hopelessness in this dystopian take of an alien takeover.

As a literary amuse bouche, this hits the mark. Katie, Makai, and this world leave a lasting impression that will get a one-click from me come March 2022.

TW: Death, graphic violence. Implication of actual and attempted sexual assault.
